Background of the Study
School-based health programs are essential in promoting health awareness, preventing diseases, and addressing common health issues among school-aged children. These programs, often led by nurses, include immunization campaigns, nutritional support, hygiene education, and mental health services (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Studies have shown that well-implemented school health programs contribute to reduced absenteeism, improved academic performance, and better overall student well-being (Adebayo & Musa, 2023).
In Maiduguri, where children face significant health challenges due to malnutrition, infectious diseases, and limited access to healthcare, school-based health interventions serve as a critical avenue for improving public health outcomes (Ogunleye & Bello, 2024). Nurses play a key role in these programs by providing preventive care, first aid, and health education. However, the effectiveness of these programs in improving child health in Maiduguri remains underexplored.
Despite government and non-governmental efforts to implement school-based health programs, issues such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and shortages of healthcare personnel may affect their impact (Ibrahim & Adekunle, 2023). Evaluating the effectiveness of these programs will help determine their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Children in Maiduguri face various health challenges, including malnutrition, communicable diseases, and inadequate hygiene, which negatively impact their education and well-being (Maslach & Leiter, 2023). School-based health programs led by nurses aim to address these issues, yet their overall effectiveness remains uncertain (Okeke & Yusuf, 2024).
Several factors, such as limited healthcare resources, inconsistent program implementation, and lack of community engagement, may hinder the success of these programs (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). Without a clear assessment of their effectiveness, it is difficult to determine whether school-based health interventions are achieving their intended outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effectiveness of school-based health programs led by nurses in Maiduguri.
2. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of school health programs.
3. To evaluate the impact of school-based health programs on students’ health and academic performance.
Research Questions
1. How effective are school-based health programs led by nurses in Maiduguri?
2. What are the main challenges affecting the implementation of these programs?
3. What is the impact of school-based health programs on students' health and academic performance?
Research Hypotheses
1. School-based health programs led by nurses in Maiduguri have a significant impact on students’ health and well-being.
2. Resource limitations and poor infrastructure hinder the effectiveness of school-based health programs.
3. School-based health programs positively influence students' academic performance and school attendance.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on school-based health programs in Maiduguri and the role of nurses in their implementation. It does not include other regions or non-nurse-led health interventions. Limitations may include variations in program implementation across schools and potential bias in self-reported health outcomes.
